It was 29th September 2008, I was taking my semester finals with another student at the Philippine Embassy when the Social Welfare Attaché walked in. His desk was a little distance from ours, and we were in his direct view. We chatted a little from our positions, he mostly asking about the nature of our activity there (what we were doing, for which semester, the university we were enrolled in, etc). At the time, Mr Cabilao had been in KL three months and was in need of an assistant, so I promised to leave a CV on his desk during the weekend when I take the rest of my exams. Before leaving, he passed me two business cards: one that stated his current post, and the other as DSWD Philippines Social Technology Bureau Director.

Though his death comes as a shock, perhaps the manner of it isn't quite so shocking. He had informed me then that his job sometimes involved dealing with criminal cases that required police intervention. Unless his murder was of a personal nature, it's possible that he was killed in connection with a case he was working on.

To the Cabilao family and to the rest of his loved ones, my sincerest and deepest condolences.

KUALA LUMPUR: A senior official with the Philippine Embassy was murdered at his home with multiple head and body injuries in his apartment.

Finardo G. Cabilao, 52, the head of social welfare department of the embassy, was found sprawled in a pool of blood in the hall of his Casa Ria apartment here in Taman Maluri yesterday.

He was believed to have been repeatedly assaulted and beaten with blunt objects by more than one attacker.

Police ruled out robbery as a motive as Cabilao’s cash and valuables, such as camera, lap-top, watch and other belongings were left intact. The case is investigated as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

At 11am, several Philippine embassy officials rushed to Cabilao’s home after they received a call from his wife in Manila, and had suspected something amiss when he did not turn up for work.

It is learnt that the wife had asked the embassy to check on her husband as Cabilao never failed to call her every morning since he began working here several years ago.

The officials arrived at Cabilao’s unit on the first floor and found the front grille gate unlocked. They discovered the body in the hall and alerted the police.

City CID chief Datuk SAC II Ku Chin Wah said police found a broken wooden chair in the hall believed to been used by the suspects to beat Cabilao.

His body was taken to the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for a post-mortem.

SAC II Ku said a neighbour claimed that a couple visited Cabilao just after 11pm on Thursday.

"The neighbour told us that he heard Cabilao and the couple got into a shouting match.

"He claimed the couple then stormed out a little later and sped off in a car," SAC II Ku said.

He urged anyone with information to contact the Rakan Cop Hotline at 03-2115 9999 or SMS to 32728.

Months ago, I wanted to transfer this blog to WordPress, to occupy annkanni.com instead of its present subdomain. Following instructions provided on the WP website, I created a MySQL database within my domain, downloaded the latest WP files, created wp-config.php from wp-config-sample.php and edited its content accordingly, uploaded everything to my webhost server, then logged into the WP website admin. That's when I realized that, "WordPress, we have a problem." Or more specifically, a Bad Gateway error.

Hoping to fix it, I repeated the whole process over and over for weeks, making tweaks here and there with the help of online tutorials and forums. Still, the problem persisted, so I decided to leave it for a while. Well, for months.

Fast forward to February this year, when sis wanted to include an order form on her website which sells homemade baked products. So I created the form and uploaded it to her website, created a Thank You page onsite, created a cgi file using this perl script and uploaded that to my webhost server, then tested the order form. After pressing the Submit button, I was again greeted with a Bad Gateway error.

To make matters worse, my blog posts stopped publishing altogether.

THAT DID IT. I vowed to get the problem fixed once and for all. Took three weeks, what with other pressing matters to attend to, but it's done. Finally.

The problem? My domain was hosted on a Windows server platform, which for some reason blocked file permissions from being made to the cgi folder and files, as well as to other folders and files. The solution? My domain is now hosted on a Linux server platform, plus I'm now using a friendlier ftp program. A shoutout to my webhosting provider of three years, whose fast and efficient online support has got to be experienced to be believed.

Gotta get working on that WordPress migration soon.

...that you won't find in He's Just Not That Into You. This is the lengthy title of an amusing video promoting the movie based on the book of the same title {*runs out of breath*}.

So...was viewing this enough to convince you dudes to go see the movie? Who would you choose to take along; your buds, or your girlfriends? Ha!

Since acquiring the oven last June, I've used it exclusively for dinners like pasta, pizza, fish, lamb, and chicken. Considering I prefer the intuitive approach over following a recipe, the dishes have turned out rather well so far. To quote the series concept of Michael Smith's Chef At Home, "Close your cookbooks, look in the fridge, fire your imagination and let your instincts and appetite be your guide!"

It's only in the last couple weeks that I've finally been able to get started on pastries. And what a steep learning curve it's been for me. Measurements have to be more precise, making it necessary to be guided by recipes. I've also had to purchase additional measuring and baking implements. Furthermore, the price of baking ingredients is more than what I'd normally pay for a main meal.

The original intention was to start with breads, wholemeal in particular. Bought all the right ingredients, or so I thought, only to realize later that, oops...I bought self-raising wholemeal flour instead of the regular one! Now breads will have to wait.

Wholemeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
Wholemeal Chocolate Chip Cupcakes

For the choco chip recipe, I reduced the amount of sugar. For the cornflakes-oatmeal recipe, I used honey in place of sugar.

The ultimate goal is to be skilled at baking healthier versions of well-known pastries. For now, preparing pastries seems to take more time and effort than preparing dinners, and also uses up more utensils!

The song "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts, from the album Me And My Gang, resonates with where I am at the moment, having closed a chapter in my life and opened another. It's a good place, and it's getting better with time. As I keep moving forward towards the promising road ahead, this is my wish for the one who is no longer a part of my life's journey.

Oooh…

I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow
And each road leads you where you wanna go
And if you're faced with a choice and you have to choose
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you
And if one door opens to another door closed
I hope you keep on walkin' till you find the window
If it's cold outside
Show the world the warmth of your smile
But more than anything
More than anything

My wish for you
Is that this life becomes all that you want it to
Your dreams stay big
Your worries stay small
You never need to carry more than you can hold
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to
I hope you know somebody loves you
And wants the same things too
Yeah, this is my wish

I hope you never look back but you never forget
All the ones who love you in the place you left
I hope you always forgive and you never regret
And you help somebody every chance you get
Oh, you find God's grace in every mistake
And always give more than you take
But more than anything (more than anything)
Yeah, more than anything

My wish for you
Is that this life becomes all that you want it to
Your dreams stay big
Your worries stay small
You never need to carry more than you can hold
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to
I hope you know somebody loves you
And wants the same things too
Yeah, this is my wish

Yeah...

My wish for you
Is that this life becomes all that you want it to
Your dreams stay big
Your worries stay small
You never need to carry more than you can hold
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to
I hope you know somebody loves you
And wants the same things too
Yeah, this is my wish (my wish for you)

This is my wish (my wish for you)
I hope you know somebody loves you (my wish for you)
May all your dreams stay big (my wish for you)

Researchers at Oxford University compiled a Top Ten list of most irritating expressions. Yes folks, these people actually get paid to do this. Heading the list was "at the end of the day", followed in second place by the phrase "fairly unique", while the tautological statement "I personally" made third. Also in the list was the grammatically incorrect "shouldn't of", in place of "shouldn't have".

  1. At the end of the day
  2. Fairly unique
  3. I personally
  4. At this moment in time
  5. With all due respect
  6. Absolutely
  7. It's a nightmare
  8. Shouldn't of
  9. 24/7
  10. It's not rocket science

Which of these expressions do you say often? What other phrases annoy you? Do you agree with the list?

You know what I mean...a two-month school holiday whereby you go on an extended overseas trip to visit family and friends. While there you go sightseeing and malling, dining and shopping, plus attend parties and other events. No matter how hectic the schedule is and how little sleep you get as a result, these activities are still categorized under R&R, so the brain follows suit.

Then you return home and simply can't jumpstart yourself back to reality, to the routine you could perform with your eyes closed before the holiday hibernated your brain. Soon the new school year starts, and you come to the slow realization that, oops...you forgot to photocopy that school document for submission; oops...you bought an extra copy of the same book; oops...those pinafores are of the wrong size; oops...the earlier school badges were in the drawer all along, so what do you do with the new ones you just bought?

Yes...the brain is now finally, painfully, awake.

We were at Girlie's secondary school registration and orientation day early this morning. What a difference from the old primary school. This one is bigger, with a larger student population, twice the number of classes, and longer school hours. And the kids...except for their youthful faces, puberty hit them right smack into their heights.

Listened to the speeches, proceeded to the assigned class, filled out numerous documents, settled all fees, submitted most of the requirements, and collected the textbooks. Managed to give quick hellos to friends from the old school whose kids are also enrolled there.

Phew...even good change can be stressful.
